Storms are going to develop across the region today as a cold front comes down from Michigan and then stalls out around the forecast area. The front is going to provide as the main focus area of the storms that do develop. Looking up at the upper level winds, we are noticing a good trend of general W to E to WNW to ESE movement so the storms that do form should be fairly easy to track in terms of direction. At most levels, a good amount of moisture is starting to become suppied as that high pressure to the SE continues to pump in that warm and moist air into the region. A few waves of low pressure in the region are going to ride along the frontal boundary and this is going to help spark off those storms.
Now the SPC out in Norman, OK, has placed the entire region (except Buffalo proper, but the southern areas of the Buffalo forecast area are included) under a "Slight risk" (which is a nice way of saying "it is going to storm") for some strong storms in the region today. Like me, they are in agreement with the charts in thinking that the main threat will be small hail and perhaps gusty winds. I am expecting that some of the storms will have gusts upwards to 50 to maybe 60-mph. My thinking behind this is that D-CAPES are already poking between 1100 and 1300 in the western half of the region. Once they get to about 1400 to 1600 (sounds like SAT scores), then my interest for perhaps winds within the storms of around 60-mph will be piqued.
Moving over to some other factors, instability and lifted indecies. The LI's over NHRN IN are already at -4 and should possibly hit at least -5 or -6 in a little bit. Mid level lapse rates right now aren't as high as I would like them to be, but nonetheless, they are sitting at 5.5 c/km in the western half of the region...those should get up to about 6.5 in a little bit...7.0 would be great.
Tracking back down to the surface right now...it is warm already in the region with temperatures in Toledo sitting at 81 (as of 8:53), Fort Wayne at 84 (as of 8:53) and Findlay is at 81 as well.
Translation: we'll start seeing storms develop in the region here in a little bit. I'll keep you updated. For now, that's the weather!
