Forecast for tonight is going to be rather simple in the region tonight as the low pressure will be nearing the region. The warm front is passing through the region and this is allowing for warmer air to filter into the region. Rain showers are going to fill into the region tonight and take us through the day tomorrow. Looking at likely rain showers overnight tonight with lows generally in the mid 30's. Rain takes us into tomorrow morning and early afternoon, then a cold front will push through the region, changing some of that rain over into the snow showers that we need. Then cool air briefly sets in, as a weak lake effect snow event begins to take place in the east for a little bit. Warmer weather returns towards the end of the weekend with highs going above average once again. I'll have a complete update coming up for you tomorrow morning, updates starting tomorrow at 4.30 a.m. so make sure you check back. But for now, that's the weather.
Now, as promised, here is the first of several lists that will help us in our investigation to see which winter was the best the region has ever seen. And to start the series of lists off, comes from Toledo. Here is Toledo's number of days with temperatures of 0° or below for the winter (1 Nov through 31 March).
10. 1971-72 & 1984-85 & 1989-90 & 2004-05
09. 1958-59
08. 2008-09
07. 1980-81
06. 1981-82
05. 1969-70
04. 1978-79 & 1983-84
03. 1976-77
02. 1977-78
01. 1962-63
Please note that these numbers are preliminary and I am still missing a few data points, and there a couple of years (mainly in the 90's) that I have yet to go through, but generally this wont change a whole lot. More cities and more data will be reviewed over the next couple of weeks until we get the answer: What was the best winter the Great Lakes Region has ever seen.
