January right on time...

Weather across the region will be fairly quiet today compared to what it will be this time tomorrow. In the region right now we’re seeing mainly cloudy skies with some light rain showers over in the eastern half of the region this morning, and those are actually going to hang around for a little bit over that way. Some breaks in the clouds possible in the west, but generally we’ll keep the skies mostly cloudy for the day today. The ridge of high pressure in the region this morning as the low pressure centre from yesterday exits out of the region and begins to weaken, however we’re going to see a return of some active weather as our next system is just starting to get organized and move in the northern Plains.

Tomorrow we’re going to see rain showers begin to develop in the region as the cold front approaches the region from the next low. Now the low is going to stay just to the north of the region, but the cool air will over run in a way that will allow for some. What will happen is the cool air is going to push the front outward further to the east, a bit faster than its parent low, and this is going to allow for cool air to rush in behind the front and give us some snow. But more on that in just a second.

Tomorrow morning the rain showers will be entering the region gradually from the west to the east. Right around 7am is when we’ll start t to see those rain showers move into the region – so right at the edge of that forecast period – and these rain showers are going to be light and fairly scattered. Highs tomorrow in the western half of the region will occur in the morning as the cold front does one last attempt to put warm advection into the region, but the clouds are going ot hinder the temperatures from getting all that high, so we’ll go with generally upper 30’s in the region – except for Buffalo who’ll see lower 40’s. Now here is when the weather gets interesting:

The cold front will push ahead of the low pressure’s moisture and this is going to allow for the precip behind the front to start transitioning into snow showers. I am not expecting that freezing rain or sleet will occur as the transition will be fairly quick in the region. Now this cold front is really going to blast across the region, it’ll pass the western half of the region mainly before noon, and then the eastern half will have to wait until the afternoon to get it. The temperatures behind the front will be low, but it will be the upper trough that is going to really make things feel a lot like January. Not to mention…the lake effect snow showers in the region.

When the cold front goes through the eastern half of the region, it will have enough cold air behind it that the temperature contrasts between the air and the lake waters will be well enough for lake effect snow to begin. Really though, the lake effect event wont start kicking up until Sunday night…or even early Monday morning for that matter. As for snow fall totals, I have them low right now, but there is a good chance that I will be upping them a bit later this morning.

The upper level trough is going to hang around the entire region, giving us scattered snow showers and lake effect snow showers for the region (depending on where you are at) temperatures are also going to be below average as well, so that is something that will help that snow stick.

I’ll have a full update coming up in a little bit, but for now I am Timmy Albertson and that’s the weather! Keep checking back for updates because I’ll have them for you.
