Well, most of us have felt round 1 as our front passed through last night. Here at my place I have measured 2.6 inches of snow. Now a lot of that is going to blow and drift throughout the day today. We are currently in a break right now across a good chunk of the region, but now we're watching Darya who is down in Texas right now.
Darya is going to move northeast this morning and head towards our region. Blizzard warnings are already in effect from Chicago to Detroit, and this includes Fort Wayne and some areas near Toledo. I am expecting the snow totals that we made last night to stay the same, we dont need to alter them much.
Later this afternoon, the steady snow will return and that is where we're going to pick up the bulk of our snow.
Before I go any further, let me explain to you what a blizzard is. Despite its name, a blizzard isn't that bad when you look at the qualifications for it. A blizzard has the following:
1) Winds gusting or sustained at 35 mph
2) Visibility 1/4 mile or less
3) Heavy snow and blowing snow
and that needs to last for about 3 hours. Typically, you can see a 15 minute blizzard if you drive through a lake effect snow band. Now, will everybody see a blizzard like condition? Probably not for 3 hours, but we could see conditions close to blizzard like across the region. Some of us will see all the qualifications for a blizzard, and some of us will come close to it.
So, we're all in a break right now with the snow, but like I've been typing, I do expect the steady snow to return later this afternoon as Darya moves to our region.
I'll keep you up to date on Darya and other information for across the region, but for now, I am Timmy Albertson and that's the weather! Keep checking back for updates because we'll have them throughout the day today.
