Some Explaining to do

Ok, now normally on the morning posts I will discuss the weather for the forecast period, but this morning the post will go to explaining what happened with the forecast for last night.

For those of you in the western half of the region last night, the forecast was basically bombed. During the late afternoon some freezing rain managed to work its way into the region and then into the evening, especially around the Toledo area, freezing rain and snow worked up into the region. So how was this missed? Well I am still in the midst of investigating, but the main reason is simple: I overlooked the entire possibility of it. And then to top it off, we had some internet problems last evening which took a few hours to fix (still working on getting the new internet updated, so this should be the last internet - knock on wood - for a while).

When making the forecast yesterday morning, things started to get rushed. I ended up using the SREF for the majority of the forecasts. The SREF display was simple, it is divided into four sections when looking at precip type (as the picture shows).Snow chances at the top, rain at the top right, sleet on the buttom left and then freezing rain on the buttom right. When pulling up the model, only the top two can be seen before I have to scroll down and see the buttom two. I wasn't even expecting a freezing rain or snow event in the evening because I saw no signs of it - however that morning I also failed to check the 850-mb temps as well as the moisture flow. The other blunder was that I never once checked the weather to the south and west of the region to see what was going on.

Over confidence in the forecasts had been the major factor yesterday morning as using only the SREF rain and snow shower probabilities...I am thinking that had I checked at least one model (or even a chart from the south) odds are the freezing rain would've been detected.

My apologies to you all for missing the forecast for the evening and overnight. I did spend some time on the forecast for today (mainly out of paranoia) and I am going to be working a bit more in depth with those forecasts this morning so expect a little changes to the extended forecasts - but nothing big.

I'll keep you updated as always, but for now, I am Timmy Albertson and that's the weather! Keep checking back for updates because I'll have them for you as always!
