Surface low making its way through Ohio this morning and its doing well at 1001-mbs. This low is occluded which means that its starting to lose its energy, but not before giving the region some interesting weather today and tonight and early tomorrow morning. With the upper level low in place and following closely behind the surface low, cooler air is going to be brought into the region at the 850-mb level rather soon…this afternoon.
850-mb temperature advection right now showing the cool temperatures still way down to the south of the region. This is what we’re waiting for in the western half of the region this afternoon and evening. There is a lull in the rain showers as some dry air is trying to wrap around our occluded low, but this doesn’t mean the precipitation is over yet…hardly.
There is a backside to this low pressure which has precip extending all the way down through the state of Indiana and into the Ohio River/Mississippi River junction. This rain is going to stay pretty much in between the Fort Wayne and Toledo area throughout the day today, but the rain showers are generally going to stay widely for a little bit longer. Now this low pressure will give another push of moisture as some cooler air sneaks around the low pressure.
Already a few locations in the region are reporting some light snow…but those snow showers won’t last longer as the temp is going to warm back up and those will go back to general rain showers until late this afternoon.
This cooler air is going to start turning some of those left over rain showers and rain clusters into the snow showers late this afternoon and into the evening hours throughout the western half of the region. As it does so, the precip will continue to dwindle. By around midnight however, the majority of the left over precip in the western half of the region will become all snow showers and that is going to be a good enough amount to produce about ½ inch of snow accumulation in Toledo area, and possibly an inch in the Fort Wayne area.
The heaviest of the snow will stay off to the west of the forecast area this evening and overnight tonight. But again, Fort Wayne will pick up an inch, Toledo and Detroit will probably pick up about ½ inch of snow by tomorrow morning.
Here is a look at the rain fall totals over the past 24-hours in the region:
Fort Wayne: 1.57 inches
Detroit: 1.61 inches
Toledo: 2.04 inches
Cleveland: 0.93 inches
Erie: 0.48 inches
Buffalo: <0.10 inches.
I’ll have another full update coming around Noon. But for now, I am Timmy Albertson and that’s the weather! Keep checking back for updates because I’ll have them for you as always.
